Made with 100% natural cork, my new cork accessories are not only eco friendly, vegan, and biodegradable but they are also strong and durable, water resistant, soft and light weight, and of course a beautiful and unique accessory.
Earth Friendly – Cork is essentially the waste product which the Cork Oak Tree will produce constantly throughout its lifetime of 200-300 years. As the tree does not need to be chopped down in order to harvest the cork, it means that the cork is an incredibly ethical material. Nothing is harmed in the consumption of the cork and therefore the Cork forest is one of the biggest forests in the world.
Animal Friendly – So far there are approximately 6.6 million acres of cork oak forests across 7 different countries (Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and France) and those acres are home to 13,000 species of animals, plants and insects that are entirely unique to the cork oak forest. In fact, the last remaining of some of the most endangered species are all living in the Cork Oak Forest. As the trees aren’t being removed from the forest, it means that the homes of so many of these species are not being destroyed and therefore making it an incredible place for these species to thrive and grow.
100% Natural – The cork is harvested from the forest and requires a very little processing time. This means that you are getting the natural cork in its rawest form without the need to add dyes and chemicals. As the cork is strong and durable, chemicals are not required to make the product last longer and therefore there are no harsh chemicals or harmful dyes that could be damaging to the planet and yourself.
0% Waste industry – Once the bulk of the cork is used for flooring, cork boards, handbags, rugs and mats etc, the smaller parts are used for items such as wine bottle corks etc, and even the dust that is left over is used to generate electricity.
Ethically sourced – The cork industry supports local farmers, some of which have been harvesting cork from the same trees for generations. As minimal tools are required in order to obtain the cork it means that these farmers are not put at risk and as the cork is light in weight it means the farmers are not straining themselves transporting it. It also provides long sustainable jobs as the trees continue to thrive and because the process is hand crafted – this means that their farming businesses support their local areas along with their families that can be passed down through the generations for years to come.
Vegan – Nothing and nobody is harmed by harvesting the cork which makes it a perfect alternative to leather which is still strong and beautiful without the need to harm anything or anyone.
Surprisingly, the cork oak forests are at risk due to the lack of consumption. As items such as leather and plastic have become increasingly popular in recent times it means that farmers are not planting more cork oak trees as there isn’t much demand meaning that as the cork oak trees die off they are not being replaced.
Through Love Rebekka I wanted to promote cork accessories and provide them in my area. I now stock a handful of handbags, purses and wallets which I am hoping to grow in the future.
I am so proud to be promoting the use of cork products which are truly eco-friendly and sustainable, and contributing to the well-being of the planet. And you should be equally as proud when you buy one of the cork accessories from Love Rebekka.
As Patrick Spencer says in his Ted Talk on the cork industry:
“The more we use cork, the healthier the forest.”
And the healthier the forest, the healthier the planet.
